Program Curriculum
Curriculum Overview
The program consists of four course and is designed to be offered in a progressive format in eight-week segments so learners can comprehend and apply the content. The last two courses may be customized to your industry and to the specific leadership interests of the participants involved. This “learn today, apply tomorrow” approach format provides immediate benefit to your organization.
Understanding Leadership
Understanding leadership goes beyond the concept of position or skills. Leadership is the aspect of influence on others that develops into results; in the business world, it is typically influence that results in goal attainment. Understanding the difference between leadership and management by reviewing key traits and theories will provide students the foundation necessary for a more comprehensive picture.
Behavioral Leadership
Strong leadership comes from understanding the relationship between leader and follower. This is often developed from the organization to employee and leader to employee perspective. A key aspect of developing this relationship is the concept of emotional intelligence, or understanding how the interactions between leader and follower strengthen that relationship. The outcome of a strong relationship is often realized in the development of trust—leading to stronger employee commitment.
Industry-Related Leadership
Leadership skills and relationships can vary based on industry/organizational cultures and expectations. A key value of this program is to enhance the classroom experience with a member of industry that has experienced leadership success in his/her workplace. The delivery will be in a classroom environment, but the discussions, examples, and case studies will relate specifically to common workplace issues experienced in a particular industry.
Leadership in the Workplace
This course is structured as a practicum, enabling students to return to their workplace and incorporate their leadership training into their daily activities. Each student will be provided a template that can be used as a guide in their interactions with those that report to them. The student will provide weekly assessments of their progress, concerns, and assessments to a leadership mentor and Lebanon Valley College. The mentor will take the place of a classroom faculty member, enabling the mentor to provide specific and timely feedback to each learner.
