Pivotal Texts Mod. Amer. His.
|
| Major shifts in American culture and history have
often been driven by the music, prose, and media
of a generation. This class will examine various
texts over the past century that proved to be
pivotal in the cultural life and history of the
United States. Here "pivotal" refers mainly to
beginnings and changes; we will investigate texts
that caused something new to arise or that
affected a change in the direction of American
culture. Likewise, "text" will encompass a broad
sampling of mediums, including books, movies,
music, documents, poetry, and more. We will
investigate the historic and social forces behind
the text to analyze how and why the cultural shift
took place when it did to create a more complex
and comprehensive understanding of the American
experience. Fulfills requirement: Social Scientific Inquiry,Civic Engagement. This course may be repeated for credit as topic changes. 3 credits. |
